The Basic Science of Chemotherapy (2017)

From 2016 through 2017 I worked with Dr. Som Mukherjee and Dr. Ilana Bayer to create a series of learning modules on The Basic Science of Chemotherapy. We were awarded a $5000 Priority Areas for Learning and Teaching Research (PALAT) Grant from MIIETL to aid in the efforts. I directly supported Gillian Lampkin in her development of the modules, and provided services such as training on the use of Articulate, hosting of the modules, etc.

In addition, a randomized control trial with a sample population including all PGY 4/5 medical oncology residents across Canada was run.

Grant Summary

We are developing electronic modules to teach the basic science of chemotherapy for PGY 4 and 5 medical oncology residents. These modules will replace current academic half day lectures. Our goals in developing these modules are to improve basic science knowledge retention and to provide learners with a teaching format that is flexible and allows for the residency program to track progress. Our research question is focused on how to best implement online modules into a residency curriculum. Specifically we will conduct a randomized control trial to evaluate whether spaced access to modular components of an online course on basic science of chemotherapy versus simultaneous access over the same time period significantly improves knowledge retention. The results of this study will help guide how future blended electronic and traditional residency education is implemented.
